El viaje a Oceanía es el más largo que podamos realizar. Partir para dar la vuelta al mundo y aterrizar en una tierra que en buena parte aún está deshabitada, como sucede en Australia o Nueva Zelanda. O en islas que, de tan lejanas, nos hacen dudar que encontraremos un lugar en el que poner el pie en medio del mar.
Australia es la tierra del sueño aborigen, un espacio que contrapone la vibrante vida cosmopolita de Sidney o Melbourne con un desierto que los primeros habitantes del país atraviesan sin perderse gracias a la guía de un cántico sagrado que aprendieron de sus ancestros. Un lugar, además, habitado por animales imposibles de encontrar en otros lugares, como los canguros o los koalas.
Cerca, Nueva Zelanda tiene más ovejas que habitantes. La isla norte bulle por la fuerza de los volcanes, y la sur la atraviesa por una cordillera imposible, con el monte Cook en medio. Según la leyenda, el pico está formado por el cuerpo helado de los navegantes polinesios que naufragaron aquí, remando desde quien sabe desde qué lejano arrecife. Y es cierto que en Melanesia, Micronesia y Polinesia hay rasgos culturales comunes con los maoríes de Nueva Zelanda.
